Stephen “Andy” Anderson: Photographer for The Southland Music Line

An article by Johnny Cole .

Stephen “Andy” Anderson, The Southland Music Line’s co-founder and longtime photographer, was the subject of Jim Hannaford’s article, “Hittin’ the Blues Trail with Stephen Anderson,” featured on Scenic 98 Coastal in early 2025. In this article we highlight our very own Andy and celebrate his many accomplishments as a professional photographer.

Andy, as many of his friends call him, has been a professional photographer since the 1970s. He studied radio, television, and film at the University of Southern Mississippi and photography at the Artography Academy in North Hollywood, California. Anderson has photographed many famous musicians, athletes, celebrities from film and television, and politicians. His photos have appeared in magazines, websites, album covers, and books. He has had the privilege of photographing from the sidelines of NFL games to backstage at popular music events, such as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

Muhammad Ali, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Johnny and June Carter Cash, Billy Joel, The Police, B.B. King, Diana Ross, Crosby, Stills & Nash, the Allman Brothers Band, Boz Scaggs, Dr. John, Buddy Guy, Jimmy Buffett, John Hiatt, Snoop Dogg, Slash from Guns N’ Roses, and Leland Sklar are a few examples of those he has photographed. A more extensive list of those he has photographed for The Southland Music Line appears later in this article.

Since co-founding The Southland Music Line with Johnny Cole and Robby Amonett in 2013, Anderson has photographed more than a thousand different musicians, celebrities, and notable people. He has enjoyed taking photos at many of the Gulf Coast’s most popular music venues, including Callaghan’s Irish Social Club, Ground Zero Blues Club, the Frog Pond at Blue Moon Farm, The People’s Room of Mobile, Jack’s by the Tracks, The Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Arts Center, 100 Men Hall, The Grand Magnolia, and The Sound Amphitheater. Anderson has been honored to photograph at numerous events and festivals such as South by Southwest (Austin, Texas), the Bogalusa Blues and Heritage Festival (Bogalusa, Louisiana), the Mississippi Songwriters Festival (Mississippi Gulf Coast and Cleveland, Mississippi), the Bentonia Blues Festival (Bentonia, Mississippi), the Mississippi John Hurt Blues Festival (Carroll County, Mississippi), the Frank Brown International Songwriters’ Festival (Florida/Alabama Gulf Coast), the official Jimi Hendrix U.S. stamp release and all-star concert (Austin, TX), and many more.

In 2017, a photograph by Anderson graced the cover of the Simon & Schuster book, Jimmy Buffett: A Good Life All the Way, by Ryan White (music critic and author of Springsteen: Album by Album). The book had an international distribution and was one of Anderson’s many accomplishments as a seasoned photographer.
