What do Sonny & Cher, Joan Armatrading, Freddy Fender, Kinky Friedman, Dolly Parton, Tanya Tucker, Juice Newton, Linda Ronstadt with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Lloyd Price, and Marcia Ball have in common? The multi-talented keyboardist, Red Young, has worked with each of them.

In fact, Young has for many years performed and recorded with quite a few legendary music artists. In 1976, Young toured with with Tompall Glaser, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter in support of their highly successful album, Wanted! The Outlaws, the very first platinum-selling country music album. Beginning in the 1980’s Young and his band, Red & The Red Hots, went on to record several albums while performing a countless number of shows. During 2006, Young also joined Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and Animals’ frontman, Eric Burdon, as his keyboardist and musical director.

Whether performing with others, recording music for a variety of movies and TV shows or performing solo, Red Young continues to be a very busy musician, writer, arranger and entertainer. The Southland Music Line appreciates being introduced to him by our mutual friend, Rick Hirsch (who is known for his impressive music resume, too, which includes being an original member of Wet Willie, the renowned southern rock band who gave us the 1974 classic hit “Keep On Smilin'”).

Young now calls Austin, TX his home where he showcases his affinity for the Hammond B3 organ. At one point there was only one venue in the Austin music scene with a Hammond organ, now there are six. Young is proud of his part in furthering the appreciation of this iconic instrument.

As March 2022 approached, many in the Mobile, AL area anxiously awaited the return of Red Young to the “Azalea City”, known for its beautiful southern architecture and deep cultural heritage. The two shows scheduled in March were as outstanding as expected. The trio of Red Young on his Hammond B3 organ, Bob Maksymkow on sax (who Young met while performing in the U.S. Air Force Band in the late 1960’s) and Jimmy Roebuck on drums were just what the doctor ordered. The first show was held at the very popular The Peoples Room of Mobile (where Young has performed several times). The second show, also in Mobile, was held at Club 601@ The Elks as part of the MOJO Jazz Jambalaya series.

Mystic Order of the Jazz Obsessed (MOJO) presents the regularly scheduled live concert series at Club 601 @ The Elks

This show was presented by “Mystic Order of the Jazz Obsessed” (MOJO) and was emceed by Carmen Brown, a celebrated radio personality who is a member of the Alabama Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame and co-founder of MOJO. We look forward to featuring Carmen Brown, the Mystic Order of the Jazz Obsessed and the historical Club 601 @ The Elks again. Photographer, Stephen Anderson, and I both found the venue and it’s unique, cherished history very interesting.

It was a pleasure to see Red at his shows in Mobile and a recent performance with Marcia Ball in Pascagoula, MS. We highly recommend attending a Red Young show; whether he’s performing on the road or in Austin it’s always an enjoyable experience.

The following photos by Stephen Anderson were taken at Club 601 @ The Elks, a venue we definitely hope to revisit soon.
