I was recently asked “if you had to make a list of your all-time favorite music venues, which ones would top that list?” Surprisingly, I had never made such a list, though it sounded like a fun thing to do. I knew it wouldn’t be an easy task since I have attended shows at nearly a thousand different venues since my first concert on June 20, 1973 at the Mobile Municipal Auditorium. Throughout the years, I have been privileged to attend a staggering number of concerts and live music events at locations around the world. The following list is strictly based on venues that have a significant place in my heart or had an impact on my life as a fan of great music. I have certainly experienced a lot of live music since that very first Elvis Presley concert in 1973.

● 1) CBGB in “East Village” New York City, NY – (some performers seen at CBGB: Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys, Hole, Joe Jackson, Melvins, Patti Smith, Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, Soundgarden and more) *the venue had an approx. capacity of 350 and sadly closed in 2006. CBGB’s Hilly Krystal was the venue owner who had the biggest influence on me as a young man while living in New York City. A SIDE NOTE: a friend and I attended a show with around 100 others at Hilly’s CBGB Record Canteen “near his famous venue” in the fall of 1987. The band (hired by Hilly) was performing an acoustic set that I thought was “ok” at best. Regardless, I purchased their album, had it signed by each member of the band and gave it to my friend. I remember telling her “Hmm you can have it…. I really doubt this band is going anywhere.” Well, the not-so-known band at the time was Guns N’ Roses and the album was an early pressing of Appetite For Destruction. A few months later, this album and band were the hottest thing in the land. This show is now legendary, but I sure never thought much about it in ’87. What did I know!
2) Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ – (some performers seen at Maxwell’s: Alex Chilton of Big Star, Beck, Faith No More, The Feelies, Husker Du, Let’s Active, Mekons, Melvins, Mudhoney, Nirvana, The Posies, The Psychedelic Furs, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Replacements, Sonic Youth, Soul Asylum, Soundgarden, Spacehog, Yo La Tengo and more) *the venue had an approx. capacity of 200 and officially closed in 2018. Some of my best times attending live music were at this now legendary venue “across the river” from my home in New York City.
● 3) 40 Watt Club in Athens, GA – I attended shows at three of it’s five locations down through the years. (some performers seen at the 40 Watt Club: The B-52’s, Dreams So Real, Drive-By Truckers, Flat Duo Jets, The Jayhawks, Let’s Active, Love Tractor, Pylon, R.E.M., The Replacements, Squalls, 10,000 Maniacs, Uncle Tupelo, Wilco and more) *each 40 Watt Club location varied in size, but the present location has an approx. capacity of 500. The Athens’ music scene has long been one of my favorites.

● 4) 9:30 Club in Washington, DC – The majority of the shows that I’ve attended at the 9:30 Club were at its original location, though I have seen some at the new location, too. (some performers seen at The 9:30 Club locations: Alex Chilton of Big Star, Band of Susans, Bar-B-Q Killers, The Breeders, Chris Isaak, Dreams So Real, Faith No More, Flat Duo Jets, Garbage, Jane’s Addiction, Let’s Active, Love Tractor, Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, Pearl Jam,  Sam Phillips, Scream “with a pre-Nirvana Dave Grohl”, The Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, Television, UB40, Uncle Tupelo and more) *the venue’s present location has a capacity of 1,200, but the original location was around 200, if I remember correctly.
● 5) The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ – (some performers seen at The Stone Pony: Bruce Springsteen, The New York Dolls, The Smithereens, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, Steve Forbert, Sturgill Simpson, Tom Morello and more; also on its Summerstage: Ben Folds & Violent Femmes*the venue has a capacity of 850. It remains one of my sentimental favorites. I can often be seen wearing caps with The Stone Pony logo on them.
● 6) The Warehouse in New Orleans, LA – (I attended some of the final shows at The Warehouse by such music artists as The Clash, Talking Heads and Zebra) *the venue had a capacity of 3,500+ and sadly closed in 1982. The final music artist to perform at The Warehouse was Talking Heads on Sept. 10, 1982. Interestingly, my Southland Music Line business partner, Stephen “Andy” Anderson, was at several of the earliest shows at this famous venue.
● 7) The Bayou in “Georgetown” Washington, DC – (some performers seen at The Bayou: The Blasters, BoDeans, Charlie Watts, Crowded House, Graham Parker, Grayson Hugh, The Hooters, Iggy Pop, INXS, J.J. Cale, John Lee Hooker, Lone Justice, Meat Loaf, Nick Lowe, Ramones, The Replacements, The Romantics, Simply Red, Warren Zevon, Widespread Panic and more) *the venue had a capacity of 450 to maybe 500 and closed in 1999. It remains as one of Washington, DC’s most cherished music venues. My future brother-in-law even attended numerous shows there, too.

Several, including Bruce Springsteen, offered to pay off venue’s rental debts to its landlord, NYU, but in the end the club owners decided to close up shop. The Bottom Line is one of rock music’s most celebrated and famous live music venues; Cafe Wha? in “Greenwich Village” New York City, NY – The club’s motto is “Greenwich Village’s Swingingest Coffee House” (I have been able to catch some of the House Band at this landmark venue) *This venue is important in the history of rock and roll, folk music and stand-up comedy, having presented numerous musicians and comedians early on in their careers. David Lee Roth’s “Uncle Manny Roth” founded the venue in 1959. Bruce Springsteen’s first band, The Castiles, once performed here in 1967, a young Hendrix performed here, as did Bob Dylan. Mary Travers of Peter, Paul & Mary was once a waitress at Cafe Wha?… and Woody Allen, Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby & Joan Rivers performed early in their careers at this famous New York City venue; Coney Island High in Brooklyn, NY – (some performers seen here: Lenny Kaye, Ramones, Ronnie Spector and more) *the venue closed in 2000; and Danceteria in New York City, NY – (a performer seen here: 10,000 Maniacs) *the venue had multiple locations in New York City and in The Hamptons. This has been a lot of fun and I hope you have enjoyed walking down memory lane with me.
