My List of Favorite Songs Recorded by Bruce Springsteen As Compiled in 2023

By Johnny Cole

Coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ, Bruce Springsteen’s debut album, and the 2023 World Tour that kicked off in Tampa, Florida (U.S.A.) on February 1, I wanted to do something special by honoring my all-time favorite music artist, the man and his music discovered by a boy while scrolling through a record bin at a Ben Franklin’s Five & Dime in Lander, Wyoming. Since the 1970s no other music artist has had as much impact on me as Bruce Springsteen. From those earliest Springsteen memories to the most recent events that I have been privileged to experience, it has been an enjoyable ride and fulfilling adventure.

The following list compiled between late autumn of 2022 and early 2023 contains:
● Every song from each Springsteen album since 1973.
● Multiple studio outtakes from various albums.
● Numerous rare and unreleased tracks.
● A huge share of pre-1973 songs from early Springsteen bands such as The Castiles, Child, Steel Mill, Dr. Zoom & The Sonic Boom, and the Bruce Springsteen Band.
● Many notable live recordings.
● An impressive number of outstanding covers.
● A substantial number of bootleg recordings and hard-to-find home demos.
● Several recordings with other music artists.

According to the website, BruceBase, Springsteen has more than 1500 different songs recorded (nearly 600 originals), but the number is actually much higher. This is my latest attempt at listing 800 of those songs. While compiling the list, I re-listened to every song featured and then some.

It does not feature multiple versions of certain songs (unless noted) nor songs where Springsteen is primarily backing up another artist.

The purpose of this list is for it to be as a tool for teaching the process of archiving.

This list is dedicated to my father who had to put up with me and my obsession with music, and in a huge part, Bruce Springsteen. Despite some of our differences, my father would have gotten a kick out of some of the things that have happened to his son in recent years. One of my fondest memories about my father when it came to Springsteen took place en route to New York City. While my parents were driving me to my new home, my father surprised me by putting on “Born to Run” as we crossed the New Jersey state line. I’ll never forget that moment for many reasons. The song’s dramatic intro has never sounded better than it did on that 1980s day. To this very day when I cross that state line into the home state of The Boss, I traditionally put on his most celebrated and memorable song. I will never forget my father’s kind gesture. Those car speakers were definitely a rockin’.

I would also like to mention two music artists with a love for Springsteen’s music. Wyatt Edmondson, who has a brand new album, Made for the Road, with elements of Springsteen’s influence throughout, including the song “Joe Roberts” which is inspired by the song “Highway Patrolman” from Springsteen’s 1982 album Nebraska; and secondly, singer-songwriter and soon-to-be Belmont University graduate, Summerlyn Powers, for her newly found interest in “The Boss”. Her recent enthusiasm for Springsteen’s music has been a joy to witness. Both of these artists have a talent for painting a picture with a song, just as Springsteen has done since the sixties.

And now the list compiled by me with commentary (3 pages; 800 song entries):

() songs written by Bruce Springsteen.
