On the evening of Wednesday, February 7, 2024, singer-songwriter John Moreland returned to Callaghan’s Irish Social Club in Mobile, Alabama for a sold-out performance. It had been a few years since Moreland’s last visit to Callaghan’s, considered by many to be one of the best live music venues in the deep south. The Southland Music Line first had the privilege of seeing Moreland at the 30A Songwriters Festival in the Florida panhandle and later at Callaghan’s in 2015. We followed the second show with our article “John Moreland Showcases Latest Album ‘High on Tulsa Heat’ To An Attentive Alabama Audience,” which featured photos by guest photographer Shane Rice. In that article, we spoke much about Moreland’s unique style of songwriting and mentioned his longtime friend and collaborator, John Calvin Abney.

Since 2015, The Southland Music Line has enjoyed several John Moreland shows captured by photographer Stephen “Andy” Anderson and artist Robby Amonett. Moreland has an outstanding discography, which includes Earthbound Blues (2011) and the brilliant In the Throes (2013). Moreland’s next album, High on Tulsa Heat, garnered continued recognition and praise from fans and critics alike. Moreland’s following albums, Big Bad Luv, (2017), LP5 (2020), and Birds on the Ceiling (2022), built on his growing success. He has been introduced to millions thanks to his appearances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, CBS This Morning, NPR Tiny Desk Concert, and more. Numerous magazines have also spotlighted Moreland with positive reviews, and rightfully so.

This past year, Mooreland released Live at Third Man Records, which features nine tracks recorded during a 2022 set in Nashville. Earlier this year, the tenth anniversary edition of In the Throes was released, too. Presently, Moreland is touring the country with stops in Kansas City, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and of course, his recent visit to Mobile, Alabama.

During the recent show at Callaghan’s, fans expressed deep admiration for Moreland and his incredible songbook. One of the things I love about a Moreland show is how attentive the audience is throughout the entire performance, which is a true testament to Moreland’s connection with his fans.
