Darcy Malone & The Tangle: “Still LIfe” – A Music Spotlight

Recently, I had the privilege of attending a show at The Listening Room in Mobile, AL by the New Orleans based Darcy Malone & The Tangle. I spoke extensively about the show on social media and now believe it was a show by one of my “new favorites’ in 2016.

Each year, The Southland Music Line searches the country for fresh, new and exciting music. We are always on a constant pilgrimage searching and we occasionally strike gold.  In previous years, we have made that connection with such artists as Escondido, Larkin Poe, Lincoln Durham and a select group of others.

Now toward the end of 2016, we are honored to find a band  with a strong passion for what they are doing and seem to fully understand who they are as a band – how refreshing!  Darcy Malone and The Tangle’s 2016 released “Still Life”, co-produced by The Afghan Whigs’ Rick G. Nelson and mixed by Grammy-winning Richard Dodd (Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers) “This album delivers on a multitude of levels and is primed to be heard live.

Darcy Malone and the Tangle’s music is reasonably tight but adventures into a wide array of splendid avenues.

Their huge sound is reminiscent of the legendary Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound. While listening to Darcy Malone, daughter of Dave Malone of The Radiators, her amazing gift is quickly discovered. Darcy’s Ronnie Spector meets Darlene Love vocal power on “Baby Cakes” and “Be a Man”  is delightfully on full display.

“Still Life” is full of variety and fun. The tracks “Motel Room” and “Another Lover” featuring Chris Boye (Darcy’s husband) on lead has a B-52’s vibe. There are a couple tracks that provide a Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson arrangement feel to them. There is no doubt in my mind that this is a band with a definite idea and is determined to carry it out. It will be a joy to see where they go from here.

DARCY MALONE & THE TANGLE WILL BACK AT THE LISTENING ROOM IN MOBILE, AL ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2016.

Darcy Malone & The Tangle are: Darcy Malone (lead vocals) Chris Boye (guitar-vocals) Billy Schell (drums) Craig Toomey (bass-vocals) Jagon Eldridge (sax-keys).
