Not long ago, I had the privilege of catching Jay Megginson’s performance at Jack’s by the Tracks in Pascagoula, MS. I had previously seen Megginson perform as part of the duo, Barstow Revival, which was featured in a 2019 article by Brenda Germany here at The Southland Music Line.

I first met Jay and his wife, Ragan, at The Frog Pond at Blue Moon Farm music venue in Silverhill, AL. When I learned of Megginson’s pursuits in music, I definitely became interested in checking out a show. Over the course of a short time, I saw Megginson as part of Barstow Revival perform at The Greenhouse in Ocean Springs and at the Mississippi Songwriters Festival, an event held annually in Ocean Springs.

Megginson, a singer-songwriter from Fairhope, AL, didn’t begin a career in music until his 40’s, but he has since kept busy performing in music venues across the Gulf Coast region at such places in Alabama as Eastern Shore Center, The Fort Container Park, Manci’s, The Hope Farm, Page & Palette, OSO, La Bouchon, Callaghan’s, Moe’s BBQ, The Frog Pond at Blue Moon Farm and more. In Mississippi, he can also be found regularly at Jack’s by the Tracks in Pascagoula. Megginson often collaborates and performs live with several other local musicians. Last year, he performed at the widely popular Frank Brown Songwriters Festival on the Florida/Alabama Gulf Coast, the successful 12th Annual Mississippi Songwriters Festival in Ocean Springs, MS, Hoodstock in Perdido Key, FL, and the Ozone Songwriters Festival in Mandeville, LA. In 2021, he performed an amazing 158 shows – quite an accomplishment for any musician, especially, during “the pandemic!”

In January of this year, Megginson’s original song “Lie to Me” aired on Mobile’s 92ZEW. This song and “29 Years” (another of Megginson’s originals) were both placed on Spotify and Apple iTunes. By the end of this year, he plans to release his first full-length album combining tongue-and-cheek lyricism encompassing religion, love, day-to-day life and basically everything in between.

Megginson balances time as a musician with his career as a physical therapist at Providence Hospital in Mobile, AL. There are times when he can be found with his guitar playing to patients – yes, the healing power of music.

Jay Megginson truly has the unique ability of connecting with his audiences in a wide range of ways. When you meet him at a show, you meet what I’ve always referred to as “one of the good guys”. Taking into account his talent and likability, it’s easy to understand why there is a growing interest in this rising star and incredible songwriter.
